During times like this, I think about my future family. Who will fight for its success and right to even exist.
During #pridemonth I like to highlight leaders that fight for my right, even when it’s not popular.
A.J. Stevens for Kansas is a campaign determined on building a new coalition, a coalition that brings in everyone, without proctoring a purity test.
A.J. stands up for what is right, even when it’s not popular. In a conservative community, he forced a vote on a non discrimination policy, even when the Democrats didn’t want to bring it to a vote. The thing about A.J. is that he doesn’t play party politics, he fights for what is right, and won’t stop until he wins.
Thanks to his tenacity and courage, some young boy in Baldwin City feels a little more protected and can see himself coming out one day.
A.J. is the experience we need for our families and community. True leadership, fighting for the people that have been told to be quiet far too long.
What can I say about A.J. Stevens?
I met A.J. while he was on city council in Baldwin City. I was new at speaking at meetings and was challenging the trail easement purchase by the city from the railroad to build a walking trail. I found it very professional A.J. would excuse himself from these discussions but still listened to concerns from everyone. Being a female, I expected to just be dismissed as I literally had no dog in this fight. I did not live along the easement, I was fairly new to owning a home in Baldwin (so technically not my tax dollars and I had never stepped foot into a council meeting nor met A.J. I did my research though and said my peace.
To my surprise A.J. came to my work the next day and we talked, for a long time. He listened, he gave facts, he encouraged me to continue to participate in meetings. I shot him some of my other ideas for the town and he said I had great ideas and I should keep involved. I did, I joined the tourism committee, went to other city meetings, I got involved with anything I could in my town and most of all I learned. I learned what leadership is, what non discrimination is, how to be a voice for not only myself but my community.
Learning that I have a voice, I left an abusive relationship, I came out to my family and friends as gay and when my family and friends turned their back on me for that A.J. was still there. I moved from Baldwin, but still keep in touch with A.J. He has never treated me differently then that first time we talked face to face. His support has meant so much and I can never express my gratitude for him encouraging me to stand up for myself.
Thank you A.J. for being you.
I have known A.J. for more than 10 years, and without a doubt, he is a leader who will work for every citizen in the 10th District. He has an innate sense of righteous and fair ethics and will not kowtow to "business as usual" politics.
A.J. continues to grow through education and experience, and his decisions will always be based on the benefits to his constituents. A.J. will always be in your corner.
